50+ species of hard coral identified on one reef walk at Cygnet Bay!

Friday October 28, 2011

During a brief visit to Cygnet Bay, coral reef expert Professor Terry Hughes from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in Townsville, QLD identified over 50 species of shallow water hard corals exposed on a single near-shore reef flat at Cygnet Bay. Professor Hughes managed to accumulate this species tally during a single 20 mintue reef walk on a quickly incoming tide. We thank Professor Hughes for his time and for sharing his remarkable knowledge with us in updating our biodiversity baselines for the Bay!
