Future Direction

We are working towards establishing the role of KMRS as a reference site and outpost for ongoing marine monitoring, management and research initiatives throughout Kimberley waters.

Our 4 research priorities at present include:

  • 1. Establishing biodiversity & ecological baselines
  • 2. Establishing long-term oceanographic monitoring
  • 3. Conducting human-use and socioeconomic surveys
  • 4. Assessing indicators for, and monitoring the effects of, climate change on the Kimberley’s marine environments

With our proven capabilities in marine logistics and support available to marine research organisations, Universities and academic institutions, Government departments and community groups alike, we are also developing our service provision role through land and sea-based support for:

  • 1. Deployment of equipment (data loggers, marker buoys, moorings etc)
  • 2. Checking and regular long-term monitoring of deploy equipment
  • 3. Ground-truthing and sampling programs
  • 4. Support to survey and patrol vessels and teams

As a facet of WAMSI’s current efforts to establish a public-good regional marine science program for the Kimberley, we foster scientific liaison and encourage all potential KMRS researchers to coordinate their research activities with WAMSI’s ongoing interests in the region.
